3 Steps to Making a Content Calendar

If you’ve been following along, you know I recently became a full-time freelance artist (by means of losing my previous day job…oops). Now that I have a sudden influx of time, one of my goals is to grow and develop my social media presence. Today I’m going to share how I created a month’s worth of videos, updates, and more!
Step One: Figuring out what to share
You can share so many things on social media, so I wanted to break down exactly what I wanted my accounts to focus on. First up is educational material: any quick tips I’ve picked up on, tutorials that might be helpful, or answering questions that come up frequently. I always appreciate seeing how others have gotten to the place they are now, and I firmly believe in sharing what I know with anyone who engages with my social media. I now have over a decade of experience creating a webcomic and building a Patreon, plus an educational background in entrepreneurship and marketing; why not use that to both help others and add to my page?
Second is community engagement: stories I want to share, behind-the-scenes peaks at what I’m doing and how I work, and someday some fun Q&A sessions! I’ve always felt pretty distant from my social media accounts– I really only share myself through short, quippy captions and the occasional trauma dump of a comic strip. Putting my actual face on my social media more has been intimidating, I’ll admit. But it’s also been liberating in a way! And I feel more connected to what I’m sharing now, which makes the process of sharing a lot more fun for me.
Lastly, entertainment and promotions. A solid funny video can go a long way, and I’ve still got “go viral” on my 2026 bucket list. And since I’m adding new Patreon rewards, new merchandise, and other new opportunities for my followers to support me, I of course need to send out the occasional promo to let them know what’s available.
Step Two: Figuring out when to share it
Not every day is created equal on social media. Did you know Wednesday is the best day to post something on Instagram? But Sunday is the best day to post a long-form video on Youtube? (Educational material, baby!) So I came up with a plan for when to share something educational, when to post a behind-the-scenes, and when to upload a funny video. Here’s what I came up with:
Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays are for process/behind-the-scenes posts. Tuesdays are for educational material. Wednesdays are funny meme days. Saturdays are for sharing stories and Sundays are for sharing quick tips. If I ever have something important to promote, it can take the place of whatever else I planned to share that day.
With that in mind, it became a lot easier to complete…
Step Three: Making a content calendar
I came up with a content calendar for August in one afternoon. By brainstorming a few ideas for each type of post I want to share then breaking down each day into a different category, all I had to do was fill in the days with the ideas. So instead of thinking up 30-31 separate and unique ideas, I just needed eight educational pieces, four funny memes, and four stories.
Now don’t get me wrong: about half of the month just says “Process video” without any further description (the idea being that I will just take videos of whatever it is I’m already working on that week). So it’s not like I came up with a detailed itinerary of what to post. But now I have a guide to help me plot out videos for the upcoming month, which takes away the stress of “what am I going to post today?!” And that’s a win for me!
It’s only the beginning of August, so this is still uncharted territory. I have hopes this method will let me continue posting daily videos without feeling crunched, but only time will tell. For now, I can confirm that this last week has felt significantly smoother than the first two weeks I spent uploading the Unemployment Diaries. I’m very hopeful that with time and practice, it’s only going to get smoother from here on out!
