About Me

Who are you?  My name is Brittany. I'm a comic artist, cat mom, and shark enthusiast, I like beaches & summertime, pancakes for breakfast, working out, and watching cartoons.

How long have you been creating art?  Since I could hold a crayon! I drew some (terrible) comics in elementary school, started honing in on my personal style in middle school, and have been practicing on a near-daily basis ever since. Made my first short comic in college (a 17-page project about zombies on an island) then jumped right into making Sunkissed.

What is your background?  I graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Art in Art (and also a Bachelor of Science in Business Management). Pretty much right after, I started working as a Volunteer & Community Affairs Manager at a small animal shelter, switched to Recreational Activities in skilled nursing, left to work at a local coffee shop, and am currently a crew member at a friendly grocery chain. Art-wise, I have been making long-form comics since 2017 and happily finding success with freelancing since 2021.

What are your long-term goals?  I'd really like to work on my comics full-time! At this point, I still spend the better part of my day earning a paycheck. While it's nice to get out of the house, I'd much rather use that time to create stories, expand my shop, and snuggle my kitties <3

About My Work

What tools do you use?  For well over a decade, I was using a Wacom Intuos 3 with Photoshop CS4. This was my introduction to digital art back in middle school. When my laptop and tablet went on the fritz together, I switched to a 12" iPad Pro. I use Clip Studio Paint for my comics and Procreate for most of my illustrations.

What does your art process look like?  I start with a very rough sketch that I fix up a bit before adding line art, flats, and rendering. I seldom use references, but if something looks particularly good then I probably did.

What does your comic process look like?  I need a script before I get into the art. I can visualize things pretty easily, but if I don't write down dialogue that pops into my head then I will lose it forever. Once the script is drafted, I go through the panels, thumbnails, sketches, line-art, flats, rendering, and backgrounds. I typically don't have the attention span to go through each process in full, so I usually work in ~30 page batches.

How many versions of Sunkissed are there?  Technically, two. I started Sunkissed in 2017 then took a hiatus about a year later when I began working at a local animal shelter. (It was a demanding job did not lend itself well to side projects.) By the time I was ready to start working on Sunkissed again, enough time had passed that I didn't feel the need to pick back up on the story where it had left off. The story itself needed a reboot, and having the art be more consistent between chapters one and two was a nice perk.
